Campus History:
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, home of the Spartans, was established as the “State Normal and Industrial School”. In 1931, it became a college for all women and was named “Woman’s College of North Carolina". In 1963, it joined the other Universities of North Carolina and became a public institution. An important landmark is the rock where the original fountain stood. This is where messages are spray painted to the student body. Another important feature is the clock tower that is located near the rock. It is said that if you walk under it, you will not graduate on time. UNC-G students are careful to avoid this.
Students, Faculty, and Administration:
UNC-G's 14400+ student population is made up of mainly Caucasian (72%), in-state (44%) females (68%). Most of the students (84%) attend UNCG full time. The other ethnicities, which make up the student body, are: African American (20%) and other (8%). The faculty consists of 465 members with a Doctorate or First Professional Degree; the total amount of faculty members is 629 people. The student to faculty ratio is 14:1.
Weather and Topography:
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is located at 1000 Spring Garden Street, Greensboro, NC 27403. It is centered at the heart of the Piedmont region, 800 feet above sea level. The ground is made up of mostly red clay soil. The weather is moderately mild in the Piedmont region. Between November and February, the average lowest temperature is 28ºF and the average highest temperature is 60ºF. Between March and October, the average lowest temperature is 55ºF and the average highest temperature is 88ºF. The lowest monthly precipitation average is 3.10 inches and the highest is 4.44 inches.
