Campus History:
North Carolina A & T University was a land grant university established in 1891 as an agricultural and technical college for African Americans. The college was originally located in Raleigh, but moved to Greensboro in 1893. The City of Greensboro donated land and money to fund the college. The university now rests on 188 acres in Greensboro.
Students, Faculty, and Administration:
A & T offers degrees in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Education, Nursing, Business and Economics, Engineering, Liberal Arts, and Technology. North Carolina A & T is one of the largest historically black universities in the United States with 10, 323 students enrolled.
Location, Weather and Topography:
North Carolina A & T University is located on East Market Street, just nine blocks from the heart of Greensboro, North Carolina. Greensboro is the second largest city in North Carolina with a population of 231,740. The city is in the piedmont region of North Carolina, just 827 feet above sea level. Greensboro has a total area of 116.6 square miles, of which 4.16% is water. The city has mostly mild weather year round with an average high temperature of 68.7 degrees Fahrenheit. The average rainfall is 50.24 inches and snowfall 3.8 inches
Greensboro provides great shopping and nightlife, as well as athletic entertainment; A South Atlantic League Class "A" baseball club, the Grasshoppers, and a professional soccer team, The Carolina Dynamo. In addition, there are over 20 golf courses and each year Greensboro hosts the well-known Chrysler Classic golf tournament. Transportation is widely available to, from, and within Greensboro. The city offers Amtrak service, bus service, a variety of taxi companies and rental cars, and is the location of the Piedmont Triad International Airport. Greensboro is home to many other prestigious universities including the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Bennett College, Guilford College, and Greensboro College.
Disability Services:
At North Carolina A & T, Disability Services is in combination with Veterans Services. Under the leadership of director Peggy Oliphant, the office provides support to over 275 Veterans and dependents and over 150 students with disabilities. They offer career, academic and personal counseling, classroom accessibility, readers, note takers and scribes, alternate testing methods, alternate classroom instruction, ability to scan textbooks, monitoring of class attendance and progress, use of tape recorder, and disability advocacy. The University makes great attempts to adapt to the needs of students with disabilities. Students are encouraged to contact the office if he/she feels as though there is a problem affecting their learning.
