Campus History:
Elizabeth City State University was founded on March 3, 1891, as a school for African Americans wishing to become teachers. In 1937, it became a four-year school, and two years later the name was changed to Elizabeth City State Teachers’ College. The school also offered a program for elementary school principals. In 1963, the name was changed to Elizabeth City State College and officially became Elizabeth City State University in 1969.
Students, Faculty, and Administration:
Elizabeth City State University is the second smallest of the sixteen North Carolina University System with 2,470 students currently enrolled. Eighty-three percent of first-year students are in-state residents, and the school is largely female and African American, with 64% and 77% respectively. The average SAT score for students is 760-920. Seventy percent of first year students live in college housing a forty percent of undergraduates. There are over fifty clubs and organizations and seven Greek organizations. As a member of the Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), ECSU offers such sports as baseball, basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and volleyball. The mascot is a Viking and the colors are blue and white. Elizabeth City State University offers thirty-seven undergraduate fields in basic arts and sciences and three masters’ degree programs- elementary education, biology, and mathematics.
Location, Weather and Topography:
Elizabeth City State University is conveniently located just fifty miles from the Atlantic coast beaches. Elizabeth City, recently named one of the best small towns in the United States, is found on the Pasquotank River, in eastern North Carolina. Elizabeth City has a favorable, mild climate, dropping to 52 degrees Fahrenheit on average in January and climbing to 89 degrees Fahrenheit in July on average.

Elizabeth City State University offers students services through the Center for Special Needs Students to adhere to section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the ADA (American with Disabilities Act) of 1990. Students must inform ECSU of any accommodations necessary, using 504 Student Data Sheets. They must also provide documentation of their disability from a professional.
