What's Right for Me?

It's important to find a college that's right for you--not your friend, or your neighbor, but YOU. This section is designed to help you do just that. Here are some of many considerations to take into account when choosing a college:

 

 


1. Type of college

- 2-year vs. 4-year
- Private vs. Public

2. Size

-Small school: less than 5,000 students
Elizabeth City University, North Carolina School of the Arts, UNC Asheville

-Medium-size school: 5,000-15,000 students
Appalachian State University, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, North Carolina Central University, UNC Greensboro, UNC Pembroke, UNC Wilmington, Western Carolina University, Winston-Salem State University

-Large school: more than 15,000 students
East Carolina University, North Carolina State University, UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Charlotte

3. Geographic location

-Close to home vs. Far away from home
-Mountains, Beach, or Piedmont
-Preferred climate
-Rural, suburban, or urban setting

4. Religious Affiliation

-Many private schools have a history of religious affiliation

5. Majors offered

-Are you looking for something specific, or do you want options to explore?

Many of the links provided in the navigation bar to the left under "Helpful Websites" contain college search tools that enable you to narrow your search and campare colleges side-by-side according to your preferences.

CFNC.org - From the homepage, click on the pink tab at the top of the page called "College Fair." From this page, you have the option of searching and comparing colleges in three different manners.

Collegeboard.com - One the homepage of Collegeboard.com, click on Students. Then click on "College Search," located under the heading "Find a College."

Collegetoolkit.com - The homepage of Collegetoolkit.com has a college search near the top of the page. To search for schools according to your preferences, click on "Comprehensive Search," located just above the heading "Can I Get In?"
