Dr. Rachel A. Willis is the Bowman and Gordon Gray Associate Professor of American Studies & Economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Winner of the North Carolina Robert Sigmon Service Learning Award in 2007 and finalist for the national Campus Compact Thomas Ehrlich Faculty Award, she uses a service-learning pedagogy in this APPLES-Kauffman first year seminar on "Access to Higher Education." Student placements and related undergraduate research have led to collaborative engaged scholarship projects designed to improve access to college for underrepresented students through preparation, admission, and aid through the development of programs, strategies, and resources. A Kauffman Faculty Fellow, she is collaborating with APPLES alumni leaders, directors, and community partners to document the history and significance of the nation's only student initiated and powered SL program, "Harvest from the APPLES Orchard."
